One Natural Phenomenon Meets Another

Dramatic images of lightning striking the Grand Canyon

This is the moment lightning bolts strike the Grand Canyon. As night fell in Arizona, USA, photographer Rolf Maeder headed to Moran Point to shoot pictures of a stunning sunset - but noticed thunderclouds rolling in above him. Before his eyes, and his camera, a dramatic thunderstorm unfolded, transforming the beautiful serenity of the Grand Canyon to a dark and atmospheric wonder.

 

A bolt of lightning appears to strike the Grand Canyon during a dramatic storm. Rolf used low exposure techniques to capture the scene.

Rolf and his photographer friends Scott Stulberg and Holly Kehrt travelled to the Grand Canyon to take pictures of the sunset. What they got was far more awe-inspiring.

The stunning pink sunset is a moment of calm before the violent lightning storm.
