Samsung chief suffers heart attack

SamsungSamsung Electronics Chairman Lee Kun-hee was in stable condition Sunday after suffering a heart attack, Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported.
Lee, 72, received cardiopulmonary resuscitation at a hospital near his home in central Seoul after he experienced breathing difficulty late Saturday night. He was transferred to Samsung Medical Center, where he underwent a procedure that involved inserting a stent to widen blood vessels and prevent additional damage, Yonhap reported.

“He is in a very stable condition and is resting,” an unidentified official told the news agency.
Samsung officials did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment Sunday.
Lee leads Samsung Group, Asia’s top telecom giant. During his tenure, Samsung has become the world’s largest manufacturer of smartphones, televisions, memory chips and related technology.
In the U.S., Samsung’s Galaxy-series smartphones battle with Apple’s iPhones for consumer dominance.
The heart attack marked the latest medical challenge faced by Lee. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2000, Bloomberg News reported. He stays overseas during Korea’s winter season to guard against respiratory ailments but was hospitalized in August for a cold, Yonhap reported.
Lee’s son, Lee Jae-yong, has been widely viewed as the heir-apparent at Samsung since his 2012 appointment as the company’s vice chairman.
